October

4 October 2018

October is without a doubt my favourite month of the year, it's when I feel like autumn is in its full glory and everything about this wonderful season comes to life.

"Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall"- F. Scott Fitzgerald

It's a month where the last of summer's green leaves change to ambers and russets, sweeping along the paths and saturating the landscapes ablaze in warming tones. Morning sunrises set the sky alight with peaches, pinks and blues. The temperatures drop with crisp winds that have us wrap up warm in chunky knitted jumpers, woolly hats, gloves and scarves for when we head out for the day.

The scent of cinnamon spices fill the homes with autumn goodness as gingerbreads, cinnamon rolls, apple pies and crumbles are baked in the oven. Soups and stews heat on the stoves as hearty meals are best for those chilly autumn evenings.

Giant pumpkins and squashes are amongst the patches ready to be picked, for Halloween soon makes its arrival at the end of the month. Trick or treating, fancy dress, apple bobbing, folklore stories told around a crackling fire and Jack-o'-Lanterns flicker upon window sills and doorsteps throughout the night.

And as darkness creeps in quicker when the clocks fall back, cosiness surrounds the home. Candles are lit and blankets are wrapped around one another, feet are toasty in woollen socks and hands are warm around mugs of hot chocolate.

October truly holds all the magic of autumn.

An October to-do list

Wrap up warm in layers and go for a long woodland or park walk.

Visit a local pick-your-own farm and go apple picking.

Try a new seasonal hot drink at a café.

Have a go at baking cinnamon rolls, pumpkin pie, crumbles and gingerbread cookies.

Visit a local pumpkin patch or buy pumpkins from the markets.

Carve pumpkins for Halloween.

Have a cosy Halloween movie night in with scary movies (or not so scary movies) and plenty of sweet treats.

Wake up early to open the curtains wide and watch a morning sunrise with a good book and a hot drink.

Buy toffee apples or have a go at making your own!
