Joys In October

1 November 2018

Happy November! It's been a while since I last shared a little monthly joys round up. I've been changing the blog around a bit over the past few months, sharing seasonal written pieces and including a couple of photo diaries, but I thought it would still be nice to keep a monthly round up at the end of each month.

October has always been my favourite month of the year. Not just because it's my birthday month, but it's when we move into the heart of autumn and everything about this wonderful season comes to life. However the beginning of October had got off to a bit of a rocky start. There had been so much happening all at once that I was finding it all difficult to process, along with an unexpected setback that also had me feeling a bit down. But as that week passed, things started to become easier. I tried to take my mind off of things and put all my focus into a new routine, planning my photography and written submissions alongside a new part time position, getting back into walking and catching up with friends.

After slowing down things started to pick up again. It was one of those life throws curveballs at you when you least expect it kind of moments. You just have to find a way of hitting back in a direction you want to take. October may have started out a bit rocky but there were still even the littlest of joys to document, and so without futher ado here are my joys in October.

:: Visiting Markeaton Park. One of my friends and I decided to go out on a long walk around Markeaton Park in Derby. I've never been before so it was nice to see what the park had to offer. The autumn colours are looking magnificent around the park, there were plenty of geese and swans around the lake, squirrels bouncing around the woodland parts of the park and some autumn blooms around the gardens.

:: A Winnats Pass hike. I had been meaning to get back to the Peak District and I just couldn't wait to go and see all the landscapes in their autumn glory. The family and I headed out to Winnats Pass in Hope Valley and took a hike up to one of the view points. It was rather freezing and it even started to snow! My fingers and face were numb from the cold winds, but it was definitely worth it for the spectacular view from the top of the view point. After warming up back in the car and eating lunch, we headed back home along the winding roads of Snake Pass where we pulled over a few times to take in the views of the golden pine trees.

:: My first written submission appearing on the Creative Countryside journal. The piece is called 'Savouring Autumn', it's all about collecting plenty of memories from autumn before winter takes over and catches autumn in it's grasp. I feel like autumn is quite a short lived season and so it's always a time of the year where I want to savour every last piece this season brings us!

:: Turning 23, with a chilled and cosy celebration with plenty of cake and Netflix.

:: Sunrises and sunsets. I've always been such a morning person and one of the things I love most about waking up early is that I'll open my curtains to the sky ablaze in oranges, pinks, purples and blues. It's also been wonderful to see the sunsets when travelling back home from work on days finishing late. Although now that the clocks have gone back, unfortunately I won't be seeing the sunsets when coming back home some evenings!

:: Pumpkins, pumpkins and more pumpkins. When October arrives there's nothing I love more then to decorate the home with plenty of pumpkins!

:: Lightroom. I've been working on lots of photography projects over the past few weeks and I decided to start editing using Lightroom more. I've been creating presets based on a few I love from VSCO and after a couple of attempts to create a few, I think I'm finally getting the hang of it.

:: Autumn Watch. After watching the show I would definitely love to visit New England throughout autumn at some point, it looks absolutely wonderful. And maybe see a moose or two!

:: Spending cosy afternoons editing photos and writing whilst drinking cups of tea and listening to indie/folk playlists.
